Taking care of your hydrophone

Vertical hydrophone manalive audio splash

Our hydrophone is built to last! But of course, salt water spares nothing. Here are our tips to keep it in good shape for years.

After every outing: rinse in fresh water

This is the most important habit! Rinse the hydrophone and its cable well in fresh water after every use, especially at sea, without getting the plug wet. Then let it dry in the open air before putting it away.

Is the housing turning white? Don't worry!

After several years, water can eat into the plastic and turn it white. Nothing serious: the capsule and electronics are protected by a waterproof acoustic gel, behind airtight walls.

The cable end and connector: the part to keep an eye on

The plug end of the hydrophone is not waterproof! If rust or wear shows up on the connector, the sound quality may suffer.

The fix: replace the connector, cutting off about 2 cm of cable so no rusty part is left.

Storing the cable

Coil the cable in wide loops, without kinking it or tying tight knots. A damaged wire inside the cable will end up causing crackles when you listen.
